CAPTIVATING PHOTOS OF A TEEN GANG IN ’50s BROOKLYN

These boys look like trouble. You can tell by the way they grease back their hair, toke their smokes and snap their fingers… Legendary New York photographer Bruce Davidson documented a gang of “troubled teenagers coming of age” in 1959 Brooklyn, capturing the young almost-underbelly of a conservative, “innocent” society. They called themselves the Jokers.

See them look tough, get tattoos, get into fights, dance to records, nuzzle with their gal pals and loiter cinematically. Spotted by the Retronaut, indulge yourself with this look back in time, with a tinge of glamorous masculinity and teenage angst.

Bruno Bisang was born in 1952 and is one of Europe‘s leading classic photographers. He has been on a lifelong artistic quest to document the unending, multifaceted varieties of the feminine mystique. His photographs are more than mere idealizations of the female form.
They are expressions of Bisang‘s desire to record the independent spirit of his subjects – international models and celebrities such as Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Tyra Banks, Victoria Beckham and Monica Bellucci. This collection of exquisitely observed studies is a luminous distillation of essence and form, „a record of women‘s radiance that expresses the belief that every woman possesses a fount of femininity and unique sensuality“.

Bruno Bisang has created pictures in which he stages female beauty in perfection, for such world renowned magazines as Vogue, Amica, GQ, L’Officiel, Cosmopolitan and for clients like Cartier, Chanel, Chopard or Wolford. A selection of the most impressive pictures from Bisang’s collection and from the book „Exposure“ and „30 years of Polaroids“ published by teNeues can be seen at Hauser + Hauser Gallery.

DUBAI AND ABU DHABI: LONELINESS CITIES PHOTOGRAPHED BY MATTHIAS HEIDERICH

The thing that impresses us most about landscape photographers is their ability to imbue buildings with a life of their own. Matthias Heiderich is such as case of a self taught photographer living in Berlin, Germany. Each of his sets of photographs are beyond words.

We became great fans of his work after viewing his series in Berlin, for which he had artificially rainbowed warehouse structures among others by simply combining his colorful images to represent vibrant facets of the city. Earlier this year he visited Dubai and Abu Dhabi to shoot architecture, city, and landscape pictures, and also tried to show these cities in a different way most photographers do by focusing on the feeling of isolation and loneliness caused by overpopulated areas and crowded places instead of adding one more photoset of epic skyscraper landscapes.

WHITEWASH: MINIMALIST URBAN ARCHITECTURE OF LOS ANGELES

COPE_LA_11

The vivid city of Los Angeles is interpreted by photographer Nicholas Alan Cope in this photography book titled Whitewash, revealing forms, surfaces and volumes in visually stunning black and white images.
His subjects of minimalist urban architecture stand out as an irony to what we typically perceive of the glamorous sprawling city on the surface and draws attention to the fact that much of LA is highly polarized in its demographic, urban planning, lifestyles and culture. As best described by Rick Owens in its forward:

« Whitewash utilizes the whitest whites, the blackest blacks, and the modern and stark architecture of an idealized future that never arrived to tell the visual story of LA’s uniquely conflicted soul.«

RICHARD SANDLER PHOTOGRAPHED THE 80′s NEW YORK SUBWAY

Richard Sandler liked New York back when it was dirty (re: dirtier). The street photographer scoured the subway for subjects, and as you can imagine he didn’t have to look far.

As both a photographer and a filmmaker, Sandler has dedicated his work to documenting the rapid changes of New York and New Yorkers over the last few decades. Although he doesn’t shoot the streets now as much as he used to, finding that the modern obsession with mobile phones has subjects vacant and robotic.

HEREROS PEOPLE

When missionaries and traders began to push European dress upon the Namibian people, they rebelled, using cattle-horned headdresses and explosively colorful gowns to project their proud identities.

Jim Naughten is a photographer based in London. His book, Conflict and Costume, was released in March by Merrell. In his photography series, Naughten portraits the ‘Herero people’ aka today’s remaining nomadic tribes — Naughten, set against a country of contrasts and paradoxes, Namibia that he describes as being ‘one of unforgiving intensity but also of silent witness’, subsequently let the past to speak. For him the Herero story, illustrated by the amazing costumes and uniforms, is one of survival, pride and defiance, provide the Conflict and Costume significance — the images haul at something deeper (pride, strength and a wonderfully unique sense of fashion).

REFLEXIONES

MatthiasHeiderich_Reflexiones_03

With a remarkable gift of capturing vivid and powerful pin sharp scenes, once again Berlin-based photographer, Matthias Heiderich, drew our attention to himself. The series ‘Reflexiones’ has emerged in April and May of this year, during a trip to Spain. He visited places like Madrid, Santiago de Compostela, Aviles and Bilbao to document contemporaneous architecture. Places also marked on his route were developing areas in the south of Madrid, Ciudad de la Cultura in Santiago and Centro Niemeyer in Avilés.

He tells us his approach towards the depicted subject was as always, ‘rather of artistic than handcrafted nature, which means, I take more liberties with pictorial design as it would be possible for an architectural photographer’. This way he composes captivating images of minimalist nature in which an aesthetic idealization is more important than the realistic representation of the building. Seemingly effortlessly Matthias Heiderich succeeds in a game of loud and strong, sometimes subtle colors, capturing the selected objects in a unique and thrilling way.
